I wanted this product for months and spent days and days researching on the web for the best deal. I admit I didn't use Amazon, although their price was very fair. I chose HSN as they had flex pays. However the product is all that I hoped for and more. I read the reviews about the "refurbished" models and I just didn't want the frequent disapointment I read about getting a defective model. It is worth the cost to buy it new. I couldn't be more pleased. We have 80% tile floors and you feel every grain of dirt when you walk barefoot. This product is a dream. We have a long haired dog, two cats and two messy kids, and we live in the desert were we track so much dust and dirt from the yard. It gets all the mess. I walk barefoot and i feel nothing. my feet are clean! i broke down and bought a dyson a few years back and i'm more pleased with this than that expensive purchase (and the dyson was more!). I don't have to worry about luggin a heavy vacuum, put on mutliple attachments to get under the baseboards, bed,or furniture. No labor here! Of course you have to clean the machine regularly, even a couple of times in one cleaning cycle if the place is a mess, but to sit on the couch and watch TV while cleaning the brushes is a heck of a lot easier than vacuuming for an hour. The scheduling is remarkable. I woke up at 6:00 am to the soft 'humm" of it working. It is very quiet too! My dog used to go literally ballistic with the old vac. He barked continuously and would even bite the dyson, but this he doesn't even notice. He just moves out of its way when it comes near. I admit I don't vacuum under the beds or furntiture very often, now I do it daily without effort. It often can't find it's docking station, but that is a small issue. Just pick it up and put it back. Sure easier than winding up a 20 foot cord on the vaccum and lugging it back to the closet and trying to stuff it in. The edge cleaning is great. i hate using attachments and this does all the work. AND IT TALKS! I didn't know that when I bought it but it tells you when it needs to be cleaned. I do admit that I vacuumed with my Dyson after letting the roomba run it's course in a small room and I picked up a lot more dog hair, but heck..now I only have to do a deep cleaning once or twice a month versus every other day. AWESOME... a great gift, great for the elderly or disabled or just the regular guy who wants clean floors and is sick of doing it the traditional way. THANKS IROBOT!
I bought Roomba a year ago and it works well. However, it seems the original battery has some issue. After a year of use, it can only run for 30 miniutes. On the other hand, irobot's customer service is very good. I sent email to them to complain about it (my roomba is still within warranty) and they sent me a new battery (black color, Ni-cd rather than yellow NiMH).
I've owned several Roomba models over the years, and depending on your situation they can be useful. To me the Rooma is only worth the money if it saves more time that it takes. For example, thick throw rugs can potentially cause it to get stuck. If you have a cat/dog foodbowl or waterbowl then you'd better move them somewhere safe. Same thing with pet toys. And every time Roomba finishes cleaning, you have to empty the bin, take out the brushes and do a cleaning. When I was living in a sparsely furnished apartment this thing was great. Now that I have lots of furniture, several pets and a child, the amount of time it takes to prepare a room beforehand and then cleanup the roomba afterward, I might as well have used my regular vacuum, which has much more powerful suction anyway. On top of the regular maintenance, batteries -- which aren't cheap-- need to be replace roughly every year, and brushes last for me anywhere from 6 months to a year.
If the area where the Roomba will be operating has a simple floorplan without much clutter, and you don't mind cleaning the Roomba religiously after each operation (they WILL break if you don't maintain them), then the Roomba is a viable option. For the rest of us, the technology just isn't there yet.
Great concept and it worked nicely for 6 months. But since then I have had problem after problem. Now it is over a year and more things are going wrong and I have to pay for new parts. Brushes broke, motors broke, and now is does not want to go in forward, just reverse. My friend who bought the same model has had the same issues.
Now they want me to buy a new unit because they said mine needs replacing, not even a 1.5 years old. Think it would have been cheaper to have a maid........
The iRobot 560 vacuum cleaner is a great product. SInce purchasing the first one I have bought 2 more- one for my parents who are in their 80's and one for my daughter. None of us would give up them for anything. My parents said this was the only thing they ever had that does the labor too. The iRobot 560 has really helped my parents who have some difficulty in getting around to do vacuuming. This works well on carpet and hardwood flooring. All of us like this product.
After experiencing the 560 and purchased the iRobot Dirt Dog for my garage. It does wanders there to. My wife said that when she walks into the garage now, she cannot feel left over sand or metal chips on the floor from either sweeping or blowing out the garage. This is also a great product.
The last thing I want to do is come across as ANGRY, but I also don't want ANYONE to join me in this level of frustration.
This product, not to mention the entire relationship that has resulted with Roomba has been nothing short of infuriating. DO NOT SPEND over $500 for this product. I feel as though I am part of some sort of scam. Your opportunity to return the product for full refund expires in just 30 days (no exceptions). Mine broke on day 10 and I was told it was defective and that a replacement would be sent out. By the time I received the replacement (and quite pleased at the time), my 30-day option, that I should have exercised had expired. Now I am in the second round of "in warranty exchanges" and am KICKING MYSELF for ever considering this over a traditional vacuum.
I am a firm believer that good products deserve praise and that bad products, products that sound too good to be true deserve to be outed. You will spend more time following your iRobot around, cleaning brushes, changing filters and trying to find pieces that have snapped-off. You will spend way too much money shipping the product back to Roomba, purchasing replacement parts, oh and for minutes on your cell phone. You will spend hours and days waiting for "Supervisors" out of their foreign call-center to return your call. On the positive side, you make friends with the people in the call center, because they end up knowing you by name. I think my customer file is longer and more detailed than my medical records.
Although the idea of crossing vacuuming off your to-do list and turning over the responsibility to an automated little vacuum sounds amazing, it is more than too good to be true. Not to mention that once you purchase it, there is no way out. I will have eaten over $600 (if not more) and am now in need of buying a traditional vacuum.
My early prediction, Roomba, although a pioneer in the robot space, will not be around for long. Their ability to eclipse truthful customer reviews with strong marketing and the appearance of good customer service on their website will, at some point, catch up with them.

I was tempted to make a purchase when these first came out but held off thinking there might be some bugs to work out. I don't know if that's the case but I do know my carpets haven't looked this good since they were laid and the Roomba has performed perfectly.
I have two cats and a dog and apparently a lot of "background" pet hair. Four bedrooms, a living room and a large rec room are all carpeted plus a long connecting hallway.
The Roomba is out working every day and sometimes two or three times a day. She's working now.
I'm not using the program part yet but if it's cleaning the room the charging base is located in, it goes right back to charge in place.
The only negative I can think of is that a good bit of the pet hair gets wound around the ends of the spindles which means a cleaning after each outing. It picks up everything and even items I would never guess would be possible. (Don't ask.)
Very pleased with this product and I would recommend it to anyone except perhaps someone with two large dogs and five cats. That might be a bit too much for it although a tryout might prove me wrong.
1) I LOVE my Roombas, with one caveat:
A Hepa filtration Roomba would be perfect. Meantime, for allergy suffers, I recommend pairing the Roomba 560 with the IQ Air HealthPro.
I assume the Roomba is not Hepa rated. I therefore assume the Roomba sprays smaller particles -- like Dust Mite feces -- into the air. My allergies seem to confirm this. The IQ Air HealthPro was the solution. Both devices have scheduling features. Both of my Roombas start their cleaning cycles at 3AM. Both IQ Airs simultaneously bump their fan speed to the maximum. After the Roomba cycle, each IQ Air runs at max. speed for 1 more hour before dropping back down to medium speed.
By the time I wake, both Roombas are fully recharged and ready to move to the next room -- along with the IQ Airs. By the time I finish breakfast, the entire home is clean and allergen free -- every day, with very minimal effort. And, my allergy symptoms are dramatically reduced.
2) Before purchasing the Roomba 560, I read about two primary complaints -- neither has proven problematic for me:
A) Sidebrushes that easily broke
The 560 currently ships with a 3 brush sidebrush which appears to have resolved this issue.
B) Battery capacity complaints.
The 560 is now shipping with the older, black, NiCd battery pack. The newer, yellow, NiMH pack seems to have been problematic.
The NiMH pack -- when it works -- offers up to 120 minutes per charge. The NiCd pack offers up to 90 minutes per charge. Actual results depend upon the surface being cleaned.
The NiCd pack may accept up to twice as many recharge cycles (about 1,000) before requiring replacement.
Charge your Roomba for 24 hours before the first use! My experience suggests that the NiCd pack runtime capacity MAY be permanently reduced by about 12% if this suggestion is not followed.
3) The lighthouse mode is less than ideal, but a useful option for some. I suggest cleaning one room at a time.
A) The lighthouse mode limits the clean time to 25 minutes per room -- in my case, less than half the time it spends cleaning that room when dedicated to that single room.
B) With the NiCd battery, cleaning the advertised 4 rooms on a single cycle is infeasible -- do the math. Even when cleaning three rooms, the battery is more likely to give out before returning to the charging station.
4) Bottom line -- I LOVE my Roombas!
I was skeptical, but took the plunge after reading the helpful reviews. The rhoomba is amazing and the best thing I've bought in the last few years. It cuts down on the cat hair in my apartment by at least 60% and allows to be focus on cleaning other things. It can get to places I didn't even think to vacuum. Plus I think it vacuums up even more dust and dirt than even my big vaccuum. Love it so much that I bought one for my mother who also loves it and agrees! Neither of us have had any mechanical problems after 2 months and hope it stays that way. It is worth every penny.
Bought the Roomba 560 in December 2007 unit that out of the box would not dock to recharge. Returned it to iRobot for warranty service in January 2009. Took two inquiries in one in February and one in March to get a refurb unit late in April 2008(more than three months after it was sent in). In January 2009 the new unit malfunctioned. After numerous e-mails exchanged (you'll have great difficulty talking to a human) iRobot offered me reduced price ($320.00 or $20.00 off) on a new unit. They would not repair or replace a unit that I had only been able to use only 8 months.
